History

Before the Curse

404 20
Rumple finds himself a hat. ("The Apprentice")

Zoso visits the apprentice's lair in an attempt to steal the sorcerer's hat, but he's fought away. Many years later, Anna visits Rumplestiltskin at his Dark Castle and wants to know why her parents came to the Enchanted Forest all those years ago, offering to do whatever it takes for this information. This gladdens Rumple and he makes the princess sign a contract, sending her on her way to poison a sorcerer's apprentice who guards a magic hat. She goes, but cannot poison him, shocked to learn that the "poison" was actually an antidote to the spell Rumple had earlier enacted to turn the kindly old man into a mouse; he explains that he needed her tear to break the enchantment guarding the box containing the hat, which can only be broken by those who've faced their inner-darkness and overcome it. She argues that she never even considered killing the man, so it doesn't count, and so he tells her that her parents came to the Enchanted Forest because they feared their daughter Elsa and goads her into killing him - which she does contemplate, but ultimately can't do - and he takes her tear afterwards. He then takes the hat for himself, wanting to use it to collect enough magic to end his dagger's thrall over him, but the apprentice (still in mouse form) soon bites his hand and causes him to drop said dagger, which Anna then picks up and uses to force him to hand over the hatbox and send her back to Arendelle. He begrudgingly obliges, and she quickly reunites with Kristoff. ("The Apprentice")

Belle finds a certain possession among Anna's things. ("Family Business")

Belle and Anna walk on the steep and narrow hill. Belle questions if Ingrid is powerful and all Anna has is good intentions then what are they going to do. Anna reveals that she has more than good intentions, but that she has this, referring to the round container containing that Sorcerer's hat which she pulls from her bag. The royal ginger exclaims that the Snow Queen can't hurt them if she doesn't have magic. However, Ingrid begs to differ, as she uses her magic, causing a gust of wind, throwing Anna to the ground. Belle is thrown as well, and the stone is released from her possession, landing on the edge of a rock. As she tries to reach for it, Anna calls out to her, barely hanging onto the edge of a rock; she screams that she can't hold on much longer. Belle, determined to get that stone, tells the royal ginger to hold on, as she'll be right there, but continues to try to grab the stone. Anna screams for her to hurry, but Belle goes for the stone, however, she misses and it rolls off the rock, falling down the hill and breaks into a bunch of pieces. This saddens the brunette beauty, but she goes back for Anna, reaching out her hand for the royal ginger to grab. There is not enough time, however, as Anna slips and falls to the ground unconscious. Belle watches nervously as Ingrid approaches the knocked out girl, removing the round container which holds the hat from the ginger's bag. Then, the Snow Queen leaves with Anna. ("Family Business")

Ingrid hides the hat. ("Smash the Mirror")

After burying the sorcerer's hat in Arendelle, Ingrid visits the sorcerer's apprentice in the Enchanted Forest to find a third sister. He tells her such a person is rare but Ingrid insists on waiting. Back in Arendelle, Ingrid reveals to Elsa what Anna learned during her journey and lies that Anna intended to use the hat on her. Elsa is doubtful so Ingrid explains that Gerda trapped her in the urn and Anna will never understand her. Instead of turning on one another, the two sisters conspire to trap Ingrid in the urn, however, Ingrid is one step ahead and traps Anna again. Under duress, Anna tells a story of a grief stricken king who cursed his kingdom with a mirror which makes people see the worst in others. Ingrid reveals she wants to cast this spell, but states it's hard to enact and she'll need many pieces. With one shard, she casts the spell on Anna. Elsa is shocked at Anna's anger, but Ingrid explains that its a spell to help her true emotions to surface. She urges Elsa to freeze Anna, but she refuses and Anna ends up trapping her in the urn. A shocked Ingrid becomes enraged and embraces her inner monster, freezing Anna, Kristoff and the whole of Arendelle. Rumplestiltskin shows up asking for the hat, but Ingrid claims not to know where it is. As a result he takes the urn from Ingrid and promises to return it once she hands over the hat. Later, as Ingrid goes to get the hat, the apprentice finds her and reveals that he located a third sister. Ingrid gives him the hat and gains passage to another realm, where she shall wait patiently for her third sister to arrive. ("Smash the Mirror")

After the Second Curse

Season 4

Rumple finds himself a hat... again. ("A Tale of Two Sisters")

When they arrive in their honeymoon house, Belle encourages Rumple to follow her to visit the building, but the Dark One is soon distracted by a strange object resting on a table close by: a strange gold cylinder with a swirling blue center, adorned with jewels and stars. He looks taken aback to see it and Belle, noticing this, asks her husband what's wrong, to which he replies that the people to whom this place belonged (whoever they may be) had interesting taste. As he leaves the room to follow Belle, the shot lingers on this mysterious item. That night, Belle sleeps as Rumple sits awake on the edge of the bed on their honeymoon night; he is staring down at something. We are then shown the strange cylindrical object from earlier and the Dark One places something wrapped in cloth down beside it, unwrapping it to reveal the Dark One's dagger. He takes it in his hands and hovers it over the golden item; nothing seems to happen at first, but the star pattern within soon begins to swirl and sparkle and a golden-purply-blue light emanates from within, producing from blue smoke what appears to be some sort of holographic version of a tall blue wizard's hat with a bright purple glow shining from within. Rumple drops his dagger in shock and wonderment, staring silently with a smile on his face at this mysterious hat and the strange galactic pattern swirling around inside it. ("A Tale of Two Sisters")

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is sucked into the hat. ("The Apprentice")

After being enchanted by Mr. Gold, the walking broom reaches its destination as it approaches a small house. Hook wonders who its leading them to, so Rumple explains that its someone who wronged him long ago and must now pay the price. The broom reaches the door and them loses its magic, resting on the wall as a normal broom. Rumple knocks on the door...and the Apprentice answers, he looks terrified. "Hello, old friend" Rumple smiles menacingly before telling Hook to show their host to a seat. Hook grabs the old man and takes him further into the house, placing him down on a chair. Rumple follows, carrying the hat box, and he places it down on the floor before the scared old man. Rumple takes out his dagger and waves it over the box, activating it so the hat emerges. "You have it?" the old man asks, shocked. Rumple says he shouldn't have doubted him, but the old man points out every Dark One tries and every one fails, "It might be time to update the motto" Rumple tells him. The apprentice tells Rumple that although he has the hat, he'll never collect enough power to do what he wants. "Oh I will" he responds confidently, "But alas, you won't be there to see it" he says before turning the hat on its side, exposing the apprentice to the underneath. A powerful vortex opens and sucks the old man inside, much to the horror of Hook, "Where the hell did he go?" he asks as Rumple picks up the hat. "Exactly where I need him" Rumple replies, looking at the starry hat. ("The Apprentice")

Rumple's found his leverage. ("Family Business")

Belle and Gold are summoned to the sheriff's station with everyone else where they learn that Emma, despite having no memories of such a thing, used to be the Snow Queen's foster daughter. When they all search the woods, Gold meets up with the Snow Queen in secret in order to threaten her into making a deal, but she ultimately doesn't bite, and he returns to his shop only to have Belle beg him to accompany her to the Snow Queen's lair as she believes her to possess a hat that can steal magic from sorcerers - unaware that Rumple himself possesses it. When he refuses, she uses her fake dagger to try and control him, and Gold pretends to be under her thrall as he leads her to the lair and gets told to keep watch outside. After Belle has been taunted by her own reflection in the Snow Queen's evil mirror, Gold returns to the Snow Queen's cave and tells her that he saw her mirror earlier. He says that he won't allow her to harm the people that he loves, and the Snow Queen wonders when he became so sentimental. Gold then says that he has leverage and reveals the Sorcerer's Hat. He tells the Snow Queen to reconsider her position. ("Family Business")

The hat is set in position. ("Smash the Mirror")

With Emma's powers continuing to spiral out of control, she visits Mr. Gold in the hopes that he can take away her magic and make her safe to be around. He tells her of a spell that can do just that, neglecting to tell her that what he really plans on doing is absorbing her with the sorcerer's hat, and arranges to meet the savior at the abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town where he and Belle had their honeymoon. At the mansion, he prepares the hat to absorb Emma against her knowing and anticipates the blonde's arrival; when she finally does arrive, she has second thoughts about stepping into the bright light on the other side of the partially-open double doors, having been warned by an apparition of Ingrid not to do so. Gold convinces her that that's exactly why she should go, since the villain doesn't want her to, and Emma agrees, going on to ask the Dark One what he would do. He admits that he would never give up his power, pointing out that everything he's ever done has been in the interest of preserving it and even his selfless deeds such as finding Baelfire, sacrificing himself to save Storybrooke and marrying Belle have been meticulously undone by his scheming. Hook is trying his best to warn Emma of imminent danger, but Rumple soon finds him outside and ties him up with magic. It soon appears that, thanks to Elsa's intervention, Emma doesn't go through with sacrificing her powers and embraces them instead, whilst Mr. Gold removes Hook's heart because, as Ingrid told him as part of their deal, he needs the heart of someone who knew him before he was the Dark One to finally cleave himself of the dagger. With Hook under his control, Rumple orders him to retrieve the hat and use it to collect all the magical power he needs. ("Smash the Mirror")

Hook 409
Hook eliminates every last fairy. ("Fall")

At the docks, Hook confirms that the ice war has sprung up in the harbor, blocking the way out. Gold arrives and reminds Hook that he has his heart, and then explains that he wants Hook to take the Sorcerer's Hat to the diner where the fairies have gathered. Once he draws them in, Gold can use the power to leave Storybrooke. Hook has no choice but to obey, but Gold explains that Belle is working with the fairies. He needs to get her out of the diner so Hook can use the Hat. Hook realizes that he plans to betray the entire town except for Belle and Henry, and Gold says that he doesn't care as long as he gets what he wants. At the diner, Hook waits in the back room until Belle and Rumple are gone. Then, he unleashes the hat and the Mother Superior ducks behind the counter. She can only watch as her fellow fairies are pulled into the Hat. Hook finds her and apologizes, and then pulls her into the hat with the others. Emma and the others arrive a minute later and realize that the fairies are gone. They assume that the Snow Queen is responsible... unaware that Hook is hiding behind the counter. ("Fall")

Sorcerer's hat 410
Rumple retrieves his hat. ("Shattered Sight")

Mr. Gold is sorting through a few items in his shop as Hook enters, wondering where Belle is and if she's turned homicidal on her husband yet. Gold tells the pirate that it's none of his business and asks what kept him, to which Hook replies that it's like swimming with sharks outside and the minute one of the townspeople tastes blood they'll tear each other apart. Gold tells him to count his blessings he's not one of them, and Hook wonders why it is he was spared cloud's curse. The Dark One explains that it's because his heart wasn't in his chest, but there in the shop under protective custody, so to speak. Hook asks what it is the "crocodile" needs and he explains that, once he's finished packing, he's going to take Belle to the town line; he needs Hook to find Henry and do the same thing. "So, you still think you're leaving?" the pirate questions as Gold retrieves the sorcerer's hat from his wall safe, as well as the dagger, and calls Hook "he of little faith", before explaining that, tomorrow night, when the stars in the sky align with the stars in the hat, he shall finally cleave himself of the dagger and be on the other side of that ice wall before dawn. ("Shattered Sight")

Sorcerer's hat 411
Rumple begins the ritual to cleave himself from the dagger. ("Heroes and Villains")

At the shop, Hook tells Gold is still sealed in. The pirate says that Elsa and the others are searching for a way back, and Hook realizes that Gold wants to get Anna out of Storybrooke because she knows about the dagger. Gold tells Hook to make sure that Anna doesn't come near the pawnshop, and promises that when the star alignment comes he will finally crush Hook's heart. Meanwhile, Elsa, Kristoff and Anna prepare to leave, and it isn't until just before she's gone that the latter learns it is none other than the Dark One who has been helping them, and she reveals their history together. Emma, remembering Rumple claiming to have never even heard of the princess, realizes that the sorcerer has been playing them the whole time. That night, at the clock tower, the alignment begins and Gold prepares to crush Hook's heart. Gold conjures the Sorcerer's Hat and releases the magical energy inside, and the starlight shines down on him through it. Emma and the others arrive and tell him to stop, but Gold says that he's too close and immobilizes them. He starts to crush Hook's heart but stops, and Belle steps out with the dagger and explains that she commanded him to stop. She orders Gold to drop the heart and release everyone. The spell fades and Belle tells Gold to teleport him and her to the town line so they're alone for what comes next. ("Heroes and Villains")

Sorcerer's hat 412
Regina frees the fairies from the Sorcerer's hat. ("Darkness on the Edge of Town")

Six weeks have passed, and everyone starts getting use to everything being normal in Storybrooke. At the town's library, Belle and Hook have spent their time doing countless research on how to release the fairies Rumple had imprisoned in the Sorcerer's hat. The pirate starts to grow frustrated since it's been taking so long, Belle assures her new friend that they have to do a spell to release the fairies, as well as the apprentice, but first she must consult with outsiders, via email, to translate it. The two then discuss their regrets about letting the Dark One trick them both, using Belle's love for him, and Hook's love for Emma as a weapon. Despite all of this, however, Hook states that Rumple did in-fact love her. As her eyes start filling with tears, Belle remarks that she hopes he found what he was looking for. She later receives an email from what she thinks is an Oxford professor, but is actually Rumple, who gives her the spell translation, and she immediately gives it to Emma and Regina; the latter then uses the dagger to perform the spell on the hat, thus freeing all the fairies, but what they don't all notice, however, is that the Chernabog is released as well.
